this idea was originally for the Illustration Friday theme 'afterwards', i struggled with this theme for a while, then spotted the poppy figurine in the sunday magazine. she was so beautiful, i wanted to redraw her with a bit of character and with that gorgeous dress. however, surgery on my ankle left me in bed for a couple of days with no desire to draw, so i eventually drew her in my sketchbook on the train, in biro as i had no pencil or eraser. i couldn't remember exactly what the dress was like, but i like how i drew it. i'm so pleased with the way she turned out, especially as it was drawn in pen, usually i rely on pencil as my safety net.
although the message is late, there's really no need to wait until next november to think about the brave men and women who earned those poppies, we owe them a great debt. remember them with pride.
